Oooh. Exciting and curious to see where they're taking things, how the sound is evolving, and if the current live band is the record band.

i hadnt even considered that, but you're right, there may be some involvement there from the live band! that would be great. they've got a great lineup right now. i would imagine they would try to get eva on bass again though.
i love TMV because in moments like this it is really super hard to imagine what the sound would be like, and it's always a big surprise when we hear something.

Yeah, I think Philo Tsungui especially deserves a record. More than Elitch ever did. She's got a groove to her playing that I really like, even if she's a very different player to Jon (not that I'm making reductive comparisons). I don't feel the same way about tour bassist Josh Moreau. I've listened to and watched a few gigs and snippets now, and I'm not feeling his playing at all. It's either much too functional (Drunkship) or his jamming seems out from the rest of the band, struggling to find its place (Cygnus). Not sure he has the confidence to lead jams the way Juan often did in those moments, but that's a pretty fucking high bar. I'm seeing them live in ten days and I'll try to keep an open mind - I'm super excited about seeing them even if the setlist doesn't thrill me ("PLAY TETRAGRAMMATON!") enormously.

What are your expectations for the new record ?

I don't think they could go deeper into the pop direction and I wouldn't get the meaning of it ; they were trying to go there since octahedron and finally managed with s.t.
So... where now ? I feel like octa and somehow nocto (which I love) kinda failed as those were not radical enough into the direction they wanted to go to - octa never was acoustic and nocto is still a rock album even though Omar wanted to minor guitars on this one. But the s.t is a pop album, and a very good one.

They won't ever be as noisy and turbulent as they were on Bedlam or Crypto, and there would be no point going back there. Same with the prog aspect of their music : amputechture has it all and is very extreme in that direction. Deloused and Frances both have that dramatic, emotional grandiloquence and can't be topped in that register.

What's left to do ?

I'm putting all my money on a reggae album now.

And more seriously, I'm expecting something that tend to a jazzy, rnb vibe. I'm also wishing they go back to proposing surprising, interesting song structures, without needing 15 minutes track for that.

To be honest, i have a feel we'll get atleast one epic length track again but not in the typical prog style. i imagine they'll continue with this more laid back vibe. based on how the band and especially ced and omar have been jamming im imagining a very dreamy sort of album with the jazzy undertones.

So I know noone will come around here but reddit is just such a mess to navigate for me and the new album is indeed on its way.
If anyone wants to share joy, excitement and expectations I'd love to use a good ol' forum for that !

Bobby glad to see ya post! Yeah news of the new album coming is wild especially considering there hasn't been an official word on it at all yet.
And at the same time I hear that it has actually leaked as well!! If it has, it's not been made public yet from what I can tell, most likely just being traded privately.
Absolute madness. Seeing as so many track names are in Spanish I wonder if it's going to be somewhat like a mix between the last album and the acoustic latin versions they put out.

Yeah this situation with already a potential leak and yet no official announcement is mad. I know I won't be able to refrain myself looking for the leak still I want to fully experience the hype like I did with noctourniquet (my first listening of that album when it leaked is one of my most precious memory lol)

About the new album, I'm very intrigued at the reference to, fittingly, noctourniquet. Cloudwalker, Knives in his voice ? Are the nocto b-sides finally getting a release ? This just seems weird. Is it really a whole new album ? Also does the fact that it'll be released on Record Store Day means something, like more chance of getting a compilation of unreleased tracks ?

All that we know so far is

Album title:
Lucro Sucio: Los Ojos del Vacio

Tracklist:

Fin
Reina tormenta
Enlazan las tinieblas
Mictlán
Nefilibata
Cue the sun
Alba del orate
Voice in my knives
Poseedora de mi sombra
Celaje
Vocífero
Mito de los trece cielos
Un disparo al vacío
Detrás de la puerta dorada
Maullidos
Morgana
Cue the sun (reprise)
Lucro sucio

lenght around 49 minutes

Also read comments on another forum (but I do not know where this came from)
this one is probably wrong :
Someone said it's "Long songs broken up into smaller tracks. Very similar of Frances the Mute but much more Latin based salsa jams, a bit more Spanish."
and this one is apparently right :
"dont think the people who hated the last one will like this one very much either, but that's just my take."

the comments they are referring to are coming from here:
https://old.reddit.com/r/themarsvolta/c ... ont_share/

basically TheMarbleShrine posted a thread saying it hasn't leaked and people are trolling, then updated the post to say actually it has leaked but don't share it.
Also saw a trustworthy person allude to it being legit and having it

I just KNOW that DMs would be making the rounds on the Coma right now with a link haha!
I remember getting the DM with Noctourniquet when that first leaked too! And similarly even with their self-titled the other year, I believe it had JUST leaked before The Coma went offline, so I did actually get that one via the coma too i think :)

Glad to see my OCD level ability to pull volta facts/bootleg information/setlists out of my ass left a good impression on you. I don’t remember leaving much of an impression otherwise, lol.

Any speculation to how you think it might realistically sound?
I'm expecting much shorter songs (obviously with 18 tracks for the 49 minutes!) and so a similar pop structure to the songs as the self titled album.
But with all the Spanish song names I'm expecting a sound somewhere between that and Que Dios.
I'm really hoping for Philo playing drums but I don't know if I should get my hopes up for that!!

I would love for it to be a big multi-part thing divided into 18 tracks but I think us prog lovers may need to adjust our expectations of TMV in 2025 when it comes to that haha
Can't remember the last proggy thing Omar-related. It seems like all of his most recent solo things have been more poppy as well.

Yeah I was thinking 18 tracks were too many for 49 mins so they had to be larger compositions broken into sections... but then I actually did the math and each track could be a bit over 2 and a half mins which could be possible with their latest lp style. I liked lp7, and loved que dios te maldiga, but one can dream they decided to add some of their jammy dna back on this one :')

That said the title is pretty evocative and so are the track titles so I'm at least hoping for some sort of concept album. Would be sick, even with their newer style imo. Part of what took me by surprise with lp7 was how disconnected a lot of the tracks are to one another, not feeling like a cohesive listen but rather separate tracks put together for a release. I think the new style being refined and more focused on a holistic listening experience could work really well.

I feel like with this many tracks on an album it's generally pretty certain that some of them are going to be shorter still, maybe interludes or intro pieces, or small little conceptual things, which gives it some room for some longer tracks.

By the way, someone on the TMV Discord that has pretty strongly alluded to having heard the album posted this ORL track when asked about what it sounds like so I wonder if there is a version of this one that is going to be re-done for the album

I think the album title and track titling elude to a theme/concept which gives me the impression that we’ll get some sort of suites or flowing tracks with interludes. I recently was listening to a newer release of Yes’ Close To The Edge” where the title track was split into multiple tracks and it wouldn’t surprise me of they do something like that. It’s also more marketable and streaming friendly.

It's weird that TheMarbleShrine account seemed to confirm the leak is real, but there's nothing out there outside of very vague descriptions. Usually when something is out there, it doesn't take long for it to spread. Or for the people that actually have to actually talk about it in some detail.
