Oooh. Exciting and curious to see where they're taking things, how the sound is evolving, and if the current live band is the record band.

i hadnt even considered that, but you're right, there may be some involvement there from the live band! that would be great. they've got a great lineup right now. i would imagine they would try to get eva on bass again though.
i love TMV because in moments like this it is really super hard to imagine what the sound would be like, and it's always a big surprise when we hear something.

Yeah, I think Philo Tsungui especially deserves a record. More than Elitch ever did. She's got a groove to her playing that I really like, even if she's a very different player to Jon (not that I'm making reductive comparisons). I don't feel the same way about tour bassist Josh Moreau. I've listened to and watched a few gigs and snippets now, and I'm not feeling his playing at all. It's either much too functional (Drunkship) or his jamming seems out from the rest of the band, struggling to find its place (Cygnus). Not sure he has the confidence to lead jams the way Juan often did in those moments, but that's a pretty fucking high bar. I'm seeing them live in ten days and I'll try to keep an open mind - I'm super excited about seeing them even if the setlist doesn't thrill me ("PLAY TETRAGRAMMATON!") enormously.

What are your expectations for the new record ?

I don't think they could go deeper into the pop direction and I wouldn't get the meaning of it ; they were trying to go there since octahedron and finally managed with s.t.
So... where now ? I feel like octa and somehow nocto (which I love) kinda failed as those were not radical enough into the direction they wanted to go to - octa never was acoustic and nocto is still a rock album even though Omar wanted to minor guitars on this one. But the s.t is a pop album, and a very good one.

They won't ever be as noisy and turbulent as they were on Bedlam or Crypto, and there would be no point going back there. Same with the prog aspect of their music : amputechture has it all and is very extreme in that direction. Deloused and Frances both have that dramatic, emotional grandiloquence and can't be topped in that register.

What's left to do ?

I'm putting all my money on a reggae album now.

And more seriously, I'm expecting something that tend to a jazzy, rnb vibe. I'm also wishing they go back to proposing surprising, interesting song structures, without needing 15 minutes track for that.

"I'm putting all my money on a reggae album"

Sir I will take that wager.

To be honest, i have a feel we'll get atleast one epic length track again but not in the typical prog style. i imagine they'll continue with this more laid back vibe. based on how the band and especially ced and omar have been jamming im imagining a very dreamy sort of album with the jazzy undertones.
